The First Grad Session of the Season

This week marked the kickoff of our 2026 Calgary grad session season at Laura Perron Photography, and truly, I could not have imagined a more beautiful way to begin.

This particular session had been in the making for well over a year after Macy’s mom first reached out and said they were absolutely booking a session with us when graduation finally arrived. I always love when families plan ahead for this season because it gives us time to create something that genuinely feels personal..

After reading through Macy’s responses to our “get to know you” questionnaire, it became clear very quickly that this session should feel calm, relaxed, and set in nature. We needed a space where she could simply show up as herself.

Quiet Confidence Looks Different

Macy was quiet and reserved in the sweetest way, but she also carried this steady confidence throughout the entire session. Nothing about her felt forced. She wasn’t trying to overperform for the camera or create a version of herself that wasn’t real and that is what made these images feel so cinematic.

Even though this session wasn’t heavily styled or packed with elaborate storytelling details (we love those sessions too!), the results completely took my breath away when I started sorting through the gallery during my post-session workflow.

The Photo We Didn’t Plan

Aiden and I tag-teamed this session, which allowed me to direct Macy through a few different setups while he continued capturing moments as they naturally unfolded around us. One of my favorite examples happened while she was walking down this pathway at sunset. Aiden noticed the sun reflecting off a nearby window, creating this unexpected spotlight effect across the back of her dress.

The second I saw the image, my immediate thought was:
“Okay, this is her Taylor Swift moment.”

That single frame perfectly captured the feeling of the entire session — effortless, emotional, grounded, and quietly powerful.

Why Location Matters More Than People Think

One thing this session reminded me of all over again is why we put so much emphasis on helping our grads choose the right location instead of just finding a pretty backdrop.

Where you are changes how you feel in front of the camera.

When you’re in an environment that feels natural and comfortable, you stop overthinking everything. You stop worrying about whether you’re posing right or what to do with your hands, and you start relaxing into the experience instead.

That’s why we spend time getting to know each grad before the session ever happens. Our questionnaire is about way more than outfits and logistics — it helps us understand personality, comfort level, energy, and what kind of setting will help someone feel most like themselves.

For Macy, that meant open space, quiet pathways, soft evening light, and a session that didn’t feel forced or overcomplicated.

You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose

So if you’re someone who feels awkward in front of the camera or nervous about booking grad photos, this is your reminder that you don’t need to “know what you’re doing” before showing up.

You just need to show up.
