One of the most common questions I get from parents and graduates is:
“Should we schedule our graduation photos on the same day as the ceremony and banquet?”
For years, my answer was almost always no. Not because same-day graduation photos can’t work, but because most graduates want a session that allows them to relax, be creative, and capture more than just the events of graduation day. Recently, however, I photographed a graduation session that reminded me there isn’t one right answer.
The truth is that the best timing for your graduation photos depends on one important question: What story do you want your photos to tell?
The Real Question Isn’t “When?” It’s “What?”
When families start planning graduation photos, they often focus on scheduling first. But before choosing a date, I encourage graduates to think about what they want to remember years from now when they look back at these images.
- Do you want photos that celebrate who you are in this season of life?
- Or do you want photos that document the excitement and memories of graduation day itself?
Both are wonderful options. They simply lead to different experiences.
Schedule Your Graduation Photos on a Separate Day If…
A separate-day graduation session is usually the best fit if you want:
- An outfit change
- Meaningful locations
- Photos that reflect your personality and interests
- Creative ideas or storytelling elements
- More time to relax and enjoy the experience
- Flexibility in case of poor weather
These sessions tend to feel less rushed because graduation day isn’t competing for your attention. Instead of squeezing photos into an already busy schedule, we can focus entirely on creating images that tell your story. For many graduates, this leads to a more personal and memorable experience.
Schedule Your Graduation Photos on Graduation Day If…
Same-day graduation photos can work beautifully when the story is centered around the day itself.
You might be a great candidate for a same-day session if you want to document:
- Your graduation dress or suit
- The excitement leading up to the ceremony
- Family interactions and celebrations
- The memories surrounding graduation day
- The anticipation before the banquet
In these situations, the photos become part of the story rather than a separate event. The key is keeping expectations realistic and planning the day carefully.
Questions to Ask Before Booking Same-Day Graduation Photos
If you’re considering graduation-day photos, ask yourself these questions.
Will the schedule feel rushed?
Graduation day already includes a lot of moving parts. If adding photos means racing between appointments, venues, and events, a separate-day session may be the better option.
Is the location close to home or the venue?
The less time spent driving, the better. A nearby park, your backyard, or meaningful locations close to home help keep the day enjoyable and stress-free.
Are you hoping for a simple session?
Same-day sessions work best when they’re focused and streamlined. Graduation day is usually not the ideal time for multiple locations, several outfit changes, or elaborate concepts.
Will you have time to enjoy the day?
One of the biggest mistakes graduates make is overpacking their schedule. Photos should enhance your graduation experience, not leave you feeling exhausted before the ceremony or banquet even begins.
A Real Example: Shayla’s Same-Day Graduation Session
Recently, I photographed Shayla’s graduation photos on the same day as her celebrations. Her session worked beautifully because everything was designed to reduce stress. She had her hair and makeup done at home, which eliminated additional travel and helped the morning feel calm and relaxed.
We started by capturing photos around her home, documenting the excitement of getting ready and spending time with family. Afterward, we made a quick trip to a nearby park just a couple of minutes away. Because the location was so close, we were able to create a wide variety of images without turning the photo session into a major production.
The photos captured exactly what mattered most: the anticipation, the excitement, the dress, the family, and the memories surrounding graduation day. In this case, the story wasn’t about creating an elaborate portrait experience.
The story was the day itself, and for that reason, a same-day session was the perfect fit.
My Recommendation
If your goal is a personalized session that reflects who you are, schedule your graduation photos on a separate day.
If your goal is to document the excitement and memories of graduation day, a same-day session can be a wonderful option.
Neither choice is right or wrong. The best choice is the one that supports the story you want to remember. When you know what story you’re telling, the scheduling decision becomes much easier.
Frequently Asked Questions About Graduation Photos
How long should graduation photos take on graduation day?
I recommend setting aside approximately 45 minutes for the actual photo session.
Choose a location that offers variety without requiring extra travel. Your home, backyard, or a nearby park often provides everything needed for beautiful images while keeping the day manageable.
Can I take graduation photos before the ceremony?
Yes, but timing matters.
If your ceremony is in the morning, I typically recommend photos afterward.
If your ceremony is later in the day, photos beforehand can work well as long as you have at least 1.5 hours available for photos and travel time without feeling rushed.
If your ceremony and banquet are on the same day, be sure to leave several hours between events so you have time to eat, relax, prepare for the evening, and enjoy the celebration.
Should I get professional hair and makeup for graduation photos?
It depends on your priorities.
If your photos are heavily focused on your overall look and you don’t feel confident doing your own hair and makeup, professional styling may be worth the investment.
However, many graduates today are able to achieve a look they love using techniques they’ve already practiced. Doing your own hair and makeup can also make it easier to schedule photos on a different day than graduation without paying for professional services twice.
How many locations should we use for a same-day graduation session?
Ideally, one.
The best same-day sessions are simple and intentional. If we’re photographing at your home, we may also incorporate a nearby park or location just a few minutes away for additional variety.
Keeping locations close together helps preserve your energy and keeps the day enjoyable.
What happens if the weather is bad on graduation day?
Most weather conditions aren’t a problem.
Overcast skies, light wind, or even a little rain can still produce beautiful images.
However, if severe weather, heavy rain, extreme wind, or wildfire smoke make the session unsafe or unenjoyable, we’ll discuss alternative options. This may include moving indoors, using covered locations, or arranging a short follow-up session if necessary.
While weather-related changes are uncommon, this is one advantage of scheduling graduation photos on a separate day—you simply have more flexibility if conditions don’t cooperate.
Ready to Plan Your Graduation Photos?
Whether you choose a dedicated graduation session or decide to document the excitement of graduation day itself, the most important thing is creating photos that feel true to this season of your life. Years from now, I don’t want you to simply remember what you wore—I want you to remember how it felt to celebrate everything you’ve accomplished and the exciting chapter ahead.
If you’re trying to decide which type of session is the best fit for you, I’d love to help. Together, we’ll create a plan that fits your timeline, your personality, and the story you want these photos to tell.
