Winter Family Photoshoot with the Kruger Family at Griffith Woods Park

4 Benefits of Having Your Family Photos Shot in Winter with Laura Perron Photography

While many families choose to have their sessions in the fall, I’ve noticed a growing number of clients inquiring about winter family photoshoots. With Calgary’s many mild winter days, it’s surprisingly easy to capture the beauty of the season without freezing while trying to smile for the camera.

The Kruger family had been wanting to update their family photos for a while, and Aiden and I found the perfect opportunity a few weeks ago, just before their weekend hockey games, to create this beautiful collection for them. I thought this recap of their session would be a great way to highlight the unique benefits of scheduling your photos at this time of year.

1. Breathtaking Scenery

Living in Calgary has shown me that winter offers so many beautiful and photogenic scenes. Sometimes, a heavy snowfall leaves the trees draped in snow, creating a picture-perfect landscape. Other times, hoar frost rolls in, covering everything in a magical and delicate white layer. Even on more typical winter days, the low sun in the sky provides extended periods of soft, flattering light—something we don’t get as much in summer when the sun is directly overhead. This particular day afforded us a lot of options as it was a bit overcast so we did not have to search for open shade.

2. Unique and Memorable Photos

Winter sessions stand out because of their rarity. While summer and fall photoshoots are popular, winter portraits offer something unique. The soft light reflecting off the snow adds a natural light reflector to your images, and the crisp air creates a cozy, intimate vibe. These photos capture not only your family but also the essence of a season often overlooked.

3. Warm and Stylish Wardrobe Choices

Winter allows you to showcase cozy outfits that bring both comfort and style. Think cable-knit sweaters, scarves, boots, and coordinating coats. These layers not only keep you warm but also add depth and texture to your photos. The Kruger family, for example, came perfectly dressed for this type of photoshoot. We kept their jackets, gloves and touques close by in our wagon, so they could easily warm up in between shots and locations that we moved to.

4. Playful Opportunities for Natural Interactions

Winter photoshoots encourage playful, candid moments. Whether it’s the kids throwing snowballs, parents sharing a warm embrace, or the family walking hand-in-hand through a snowy trail, these interactions create authentic and heartfelt images. Winter’s slower pace also allows for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. One of our favorite shots from this session was the three kids throwing rocks into the pond while their parents look on.
