This past week I had the opportunity to spend the morning with Hannah and Amanda at Cornerstone Press + Studio. Their studio is located right here in Calgary AB. Both of these women are uniquely creative in their own right, but what they are accomplishing as a team is truly inspiring. Our few hours together in their studio flew by during their personalized branding session. Capturing many of the steps involved in bringing a handcrafted letterpress print to life was an absolute joy.
Cornerstone Press + Studio crafts custom stationary for both private and corporate clients. Each piece is designed in their studio, cut, printed and folded by hand. They use moveable type and photopolymer plates to create inked impressions on cotton paper. The entire process, from start to completion, is hands-on, resulting in a final product that is distinctively beautiful and quite different from modern digital printing.
Hannah and Amanda enlightened me on the history of this printing method, tracing it back to the 1400s, and shared that they are among the few letterpress printers in Southern Alberta. They believe their beautiful machine dates back to the early 1900s.
