Behind the Scenes at Laura Perron Photography (part 4)

A Busy & Beautiful Start to 2025

The past few months at Laura Perron Photography have been full of growth, learning, and a few long days in the office (okay… more than a few!). A Shark Tank shark defined entrepreneurs as people who will work 80 hours a week for themselves, to avoid working 40 hours a week for someone else. I am starting to see the truth to that. While we’ve continued to serve clients this winter, I’ve also been hard at work behind the scenes — investing in education, refreshing our website, and gearing up for an exciting season ahead as your go-to Calgary lifestyle, grad, family, and wedding photographer.

Preparing to Photograph Our First Wedding

In February, I completed Jasmine Star’s Wedding Bootcamp course and continued diving deep into all things wedding photography. While I’ve built much of my process through years by trial and error, stepping into weddings required a more intentional strategy. I spent countless hours watching behind-the-scenes content from pros like Pye Jirsa, Katelyn James (love her!), and Jasmine Star to learn how they capture all the important moments of a full wedding day.

After completing the course, Aiden (my second shooter/son) and I spent a few weeks developing our own system. At one point, I looked at the floor covered in plans and said, “Are we shooting a wedding, planning a football game, or going into battle?” At least the cat seemed to approve of our plan.

By March, we photographed our first full-day wedding, and I’m thrilled to say, our system worked! Huge thanks to our incredible couple for building margin into their timeline and designating point people to keep the day running on schedule — those two details made the day smooth and stress-free.

Our clients are in love with their gallery, and we’re excited to continue refining our approach as we photograph more beautiful weddings in and around Calgary this year.

Website Reboot: Clarity, Story, and SEO

Last year I launched our website with pride — it was clean, pretty, and made sense (at least to me!). But over time, I realized it wasn’t working as hard as it could to market our services or show up on Google.

After stumbling on a helpful Instagram ad (thank you, algorithm), I joined a free workshop by educator Maddie Mae. That session confirmed my hunch: our site needed a strategic refresh. I signed up for her Website Refresh course and also read Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller.

With those tools in hand, I rewrote our copy, restructured the layout, and focused on making our message clear: whether you’re searching for a Calgary lifestyle photographer, grad photographer, family photographer, or wedding photographer, we’re here to help you preserve what matters most. The new site speaks directly to our dream clients and their needs — and we’d love your feedback! Feel free to send me a message or comment with your thoughts.

Learning Flash Photography

Weddings often come with unpredictable lighting, especially in darker venues. I invested in the Godox Speedlite system and took an online course to boost my flash confidence. While I’ll always be a natural light photographer at heart, having flash in my toolkit gives me the flexibility to deliver consistent, beautiful images — no matter the setting.

Launching Our 2025 Calgary Grad Photography Campaign

Our 2025 Calgary Grad Photography season is off to a fun and creative start! We kicked off with a video testimonial series featuring some of our amazing grads from the last few years — a perfect way to share what makes our sessions special.

We also created a promo video featuring Carter (my middle son) in his grad suit, skiing on some beautiful Alberta crownland. Yes, skiing. In a suit. It was as wild and wonderful as it sounds. My favourite moment? Him skiing backwards in sunglasses like it was no big deal after hiking up the hill 3 times just so we could get the best possible shot. That BTS shoot captured everything we aim for in our grad sessions: unique, creative, and full of personality.

Spots for 2025 are nearly full, and we can’t wait to work with the grads of the class of 2025!

Welcome to the Team, Piper!

Last but definitely not least — our youngest team member has officially joined the LPP crew. Piper (my daughter) recently offered to help design marketing content for our social media. As a “momtrepreneur”, anytime I can involve my kids in the business as well as get help with work is a win-win in my books. She has a great eye and natural talent for visual storytelling. Watching her step into this creative role is exciting — not to mention a huge help.

Looking Ahead

As spring settles in, we’re shifting focus from back office to behind the camera, ready to spend more time with our amazing clients doing what we love most. Whether you’re planning a wedding, graduating, or wrangling your family for updated portraits, we would be honoured to capture your story. Let’s start a conversation today on how we can serve you.
