To help you decide if an At Home Newborn Session is the right choice for you I have answered some frequently asked questions. If you do not see the answer to the questions you have, please feel free to reach out to me here.
Q1: What is an at home newborn session?
This is a professional photoshoot conducted in the comfort of your own home. I will arrive with my camera gear, gentle lighting and perhaps a prop or two. Next, I will look through the parts of your home that you would liked photographed to come up with a plan. Potential good areas are the nursery and anywhere there is a window that gives generous amounts of natural light. Another good place to get some intimate snuggle photos is the master bedroom. The beauty of shooting this type of session is that no two are alike. We all get to let our creativity flow as we figure out how to use your home as a great backdrop. For an example of this type of session check out this blog post, and scroll to the bottom for pictures.
Q2: What if my house isn’t picture-perfect or my nursery isn’t Instagram-worthy?
First, don’t worry! You just had a baby, and I get that the struggle is real! My style tends towards lots of close up shots of your sweet little baby. Given that, I am confident that we can find a space in your home that makes your family the focus of the story. (And not the dishes that need to be put away.)
Q3: Why choose an at home newborn session or an in studio session?
This questions really comes down to personal preference. What type of picture you would like to hang on your walls for years to come? Here’s the great news, one is not better than the other. If you decide that you prefer pictures of babies in wraps and baskets, there are many amazing photographers in Calgary that can offer that service.
I personally did not want to face the task of getting out the door on time looking picture ready. This became even more true when I had toddlers in tow. An in home session allows you the flexibility of having everything you may need within reach. I have had so many photo sessions over the years where parents forgot to bring diapers or changes of clothes for the baby or even themselves. Diaper explosions happen! Not having to plan for all the “what ifs” can greatly reduce the stress on the day of the shoot.
Q3: When is the best time to plan a newborn session?
Unless you are having a c-section, it is hard to predict when that little one is going to arrive. You can tentatively have a time booked before the arrival so we know the window we are considering. Then once the baby comes you can follow up to book your session. The best practice is to try to book your photoshoot around 8-10 days after arrival.
Q4: How long does an At Home Newborn Session last?
Typically plan for around 2-3 hours. We are on the babies schedule and they will need to stop to eat and be changed so we like to book enough time that we can move at a pace that is enjoyable for everyone. There are the rare sessions where the baby is quite sleepy and we can photograph more quickly, but it is always better to plan for breaks.
Q5: What if my baby is very fussy or cries a lot during the session?
Don’t worry! It’s completely normal for newborns to be unpredictable. I will work patiently to soothe and settle your baby, and may adjust the session as needed to accommodate their needs.
Q6: Can family members be included in the photos?
Absolutely! At-home newborn sessions often include family members, including parents, siblings and even grandparents sometimes to capture the special bond and connection between everyone.
